Glaucoma

Glaucoma – What is it?
Glaucoma is an eye disease where fluid pressure within the eye rises – if left untreated the patient may damage the optic nerve which can lead to irreversible vision loss. The patient can also become blind. The disease generally affects both eyes, although one may have more severe signs and symptoms than the other.

What are the different types of Glaucoma?

  • Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG)
  • Affects one percent of all Americans
  • Most commonly affects adults over age of 50

What are symptoms associated with POAG?
There are no symptoms. Medically the eye pressure rises slowly without pain associated.

Why causes Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) to occur?
– Trabecular meshwork decreased function due to age
– Structural defect of the eye´s drainage system
– Enzymatic problem

What is a normal IOP?

  1. Normal – 14-20mm of mercury (mmHg)
  2. Suspicious – 22mm-24mm of mercury (mmHg)
  3. Danger – 24mm+ of mercury (mmHg)

The increased fluid leads to pressure buildup in your eyes. Increased pressure destroys optic nerve cells and leads to blind spots, firstly in the peripheral and ultimately complete ocular blindness.

Is there a Cure for POAG?
Currently there is no cure for POAG, but our treatment can slow the disease.

Will I need to take medication long-term?
Yes. Most patients do not understand the need to take medication given the lack of pain or associated sypmtoms.
Dr. Whitaker prescribes regular treatment and scheduled appointments.

What is Angle-closure glaucoma (ACG)?
ACG is more rare, accounting for only about 10% of all glaucoma cases.

Symptoms of OPEN-ANGLE GLAUCOMA

  • Loss of side or peripheral vision
  • Noticeable loss of vision acuity
  • Symptoms occur in later stages of disease

Symptoms of ANGLE-CLOSURE GLAUCOMA

  • Hazy or blurred vision
  • Seeing “halos” around lights
  • Severe eye pain or headaches
  • Nausea or vomiting (typically accompanied by severe eye pain)
  • Symptoms occur at immediate onset
  • Sudden vision loss
